Hans-Jürgen Bombach

Hans-Jürgen Bombach placed fifth with the sprint relay at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and was eliminated in the second round over 100 metres. In the 1974 European Championships he won two bronzes in the 200 and 4×100. His other results at the Europeans were as follows: 1969 fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 4×100, and eliminated in the 100 semifinals; and 1971 disqualified with the sprint relay team in the final and eliminated from the 100 semifinals. He also won the European Cup sprint relay titles in 1970, 1973 and 1975 and was runner-up in the 1973 200 meters. Nationally he individual titles in the 1973 100 and 200 and the 1974 200, adding relay titles in the 1968 4×200, 1969 and 1973 4×100, and 1973 indoor 4×1 lap. In 1973 he established a new European Record in the 100, recording 10.0 seconds.

He was educated as an electrician and later became a graduate sports teacher. From 1976 until the reunification of Germany he was employed as a national trainer with the East German Track & Field Association.
