Biography

Steffen Grummt was a decathlete who placed fourth at the 1982 European Championships and was ranked fourth in the world that year. In 1979 he was East German Champion and placed eighth at the 1983 World Championships as well as at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. After German re-unification his name was found listed in documents which revealed the systematic GDR state doping schemes.

After the Soviet-led Olympic boycott of 1984 Grummt switched to bobsledding and became World Champion in the four-man bob and second in the two-man bob in 1985. In 1986 he also won bronze in the two-man competition. In 1987 he was forced to retire after the East German Staatssicherheit were concerned about him possibly defecting. Grummt married champion swimmer Kornelia Ender in 1985 and became head of the sports school in Mainz.

Personal Best: Dec – 8261 (1982).
