Biography

Between 1956-62 Hugh Barr won 14 Northern Ireland amateur caps to make him the fourth most capped Northern Ireland amateur. In 1959 he won a Northern Ireland ‘B’ cap and this led to his call up to the Great Britain Olympic team in 1960. Unfortunately, he went to Roma but never played. After the Olympics he won three senior caps, making his début in a commendable 1-1 draw against England at Wembley. Barr attended Queen’s University, Belfast and studied briefly at Loughborough College when he made one appearance, scoring a goal, for the British Universities against the Irish Universities. He returned to Northerrn Ireland to take up a teaching post in Ballymena. His senior football career started at Cliftonville in 1954 and he went on to play for many of Northern Ireland’s top clubs; Coleraine, Ballymena and Linfield. In the 1961-62 season he scored 48 goals and won the League and Cup double as well as the Ulster Cup, City Cup and County Antrim Shield in his only season with Linfield. He turned part-time professional with Coventry City in 1962 and in two seasons he played 47 League games and scored 15 goals and helped them to win the third division title in 1963-64, after which he left to join Cambridge United before ending has career as player-manager at Ely Town in 1972.
