Biography

Leipzig-born long distance runner Uta Pippig finished seventh in the 10K at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and retired in the 1996 Olympic marathon. She had even more success in road running, winning the Leipzig Marathon in 1986 and 1987, also claiming the East German titles those years. She then won the Berlin Marathon in 1992, the New York City Marathon in 1993, and also won Boston three times consecutively in 1994-96, with a personal best in 1994 of 2-21:45. She also earned podiums in Boston in 1990 (runner-up), 1991 and 1992 (third in both races). In 1995 she again won the Berlin marathon.

Pippig participated at World Championships in 1987 (14th in the marathon), 1991 (sixth in the 10K), and 1993 (ninth in the 10K). After German reunification she also won two German outdoor titles and one indoor title. Pippig retired in 2002 and obtained US citizenship in 2004, living together with her boyfriend and coach Klaus-Dieter Hogen in Boulder, Colorado, where she worked as a personal health and fitness coach.
