Biography

Sprinter Elfgard Schittenhelm reached the semifinals at the 1972 München Olympics in the 100 but failed to qualify for the final. She was also scheduled for the sprint relay, but could not start due to an injury. Schittenhelm started her sport career as a figure skater, but then turned to athletics. She came to prominence at the European Championships, winning several medals in the early 1970s. In 1971, she earned a bronze medal at 100 metres and a gold with the sprint relay, adding a silver with the relay in 1974.

Schittenhelm won the European Cup with the relay in 1970 and was runner-up in 1973. Indoors, she added one relay gold (1972) and another three silvers (1970 and 1971). She won five outdoor and one indoor West German title. In 1972, Schittenhelm was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. Her career was as a pharmacist.
