Richard Wilhelm was killed in action in 1917 during World War I. He was an active swimmer and turned to race walking from 1903-08. In 1906 he was German champion in the 100 km, but in 1908 was eliminated in the heats of the 3,500 m walk at the London Olympics. Wilhelm set several German records. He was trained as a machine constructor.
