Between 1940 and 1944 Ferenc Klics competed as an athlete of the Kassai Levente Egylet and then of Vasas between 1945 and 1969, primarily in the discus and shot put. Klics won the Hungarian championship for the first time in 1946, with his last coming 11 years later, at the age of 33, in 1957. He won the discus championship nine times in total. He improved the Hungarian discus throw record four times, of which his throw of 55.79 meters in 1954 was also a European record. Between 1947 and 1963 Klics competed 57 times for the national team, and for a long time he also served as the team captain.
In twelve years from 1948 to 1960 Klics participated in four Olympics, finishing fifth in London (1948) and Helsinki (1952), seventh in Melbourne (1956), and tenth in Roma (1960). At the European Championships he finished fourth in Bern in 1954 and fifth in Stockholm in 1958. He won the World College Championship three times and the English championship twice.
After retiring from racing Klics was the acting coach of Vasas for a long time, and later its head coach.
