Biography

Kálmán Szathmáry started his sports career in his hometown and later moved to Magyar Atlétikai Club (MAC). At the age of 17, he had established a Hungarian pole vault record of 3.40 metres, a record he improved several times during his career. He was also the first Hungarian long jumper over 7 metres. He was the Hungarian pole vault champion six times 1908-13, and three-times long jump champion 1910-12. Szathmáry won the English (AAA) pole vault title in 1910 with a height of 3.54 m. Having finished eighth at the 1908 London Olympics, he did not start four years later due to injury. The following year, due to further injuries, he retired from athletics at the young age of 23, and worked as a cashier with the Hungarian Athletics Association.
