Biography

Baron Iván Wardener’s sporting career started with the Eperjesi TVE club, but he later moved to MTK. As an all-around athlete he competed in the long jump and javelin throw, but his best event was the high jump. In this discipline, besides winning the Hungarian title four times between 1910 and 1914, he was also the Austrian and Czech champion. In 1912, he competed at the Stockholm Olympics, where he was at less than his best, placing ninth. According to some rumors, it was due to the fact that the team coach had prevented him from using his regular drink before the finals, leaving Wardener very nervous. Wardener as a good aristocrat, liked good wines.

World War I ended his sporting career, as he fought on the front until the end of the war. After the war, his home town became a part of Czechoslovakia, so he moved to Hungary but never competed again.

Personal Best: HJ – 1.92 (1914).
