Biography

Norman McEachern was born in Edinburgh, and his parents moved to Dublin when he was still an infant. He joined Clonliffe Harriers as a 15-year-old after meeting Tommy Burton, who was well-known as a trainer and captain of the Dublin-based club, and who went on to encourage him to become a distance runner instead of a sprinter. Norman McEachern competed in the 800 metres at the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games and reached the semi-finals both times. In the Irish Athletics Championships he won the 440 yards in 1921, and five 880 yards titles from 1921 to 1928. He won the 800 m at the 1924 Tailteann Games in 1:56.8 at Croke Park. On 11 August 1928 he ran in the 4 x 880 yd relay in the British Empire vs. USA meeting at Stamford Bridge, London, less than two weeks after he ran in the Olympic Games at Amsterdam.

Norman McEachern was managing director of Goulding Fertilisers in Wicklow town when he retired in 1965. He served as captain, president, and secretary of Wicklow Golf Club, and president of Wicklow Tennis Club. He was president of the Wicklow and District Chamber of Commerce in 1964/65.

Personal Best: 800 – 1:54.9y (1927).
