Biography

Sim Bok-Seok was a Korean distance runner who competed in the 5,000 metres at the 1948 London Olympics. Sim attended Korea University and in 1949 was chosen to recite the athlete’s oath at the Korean National Sports Festival.

Sim won the 1952 Korean title over 5,000 metres and was then recruited to run for Brigham Young University (BYU) in the United States. He competed in track and cross-country for BYU, winning the 1956 Inter-Mountain AAU cross-country title and leading BYU to the team title. Sim finished sixth in the 5,000 metres at the 1956 NCAA Championships.

Sim later ran the Boston Marathon in 1955 and 1958, finishing in 35th place in 1958 and failing to finish in 1955. During the Korean War Sim worked as a translator for the South Korean and American military. After his graduation from BYU, he moved to California and became an American citizen, working for ARCO until his retirement in 1985.
