Biography

Murray Waxman’s basketball career with the Young Men’s Hebrew Association of Montreal began in the aftermath of World War II and soon saw success when his team won the Eastern Canadian Championships in 1948. This led to several of its members, including Waxman, to be selected to represent the nation at that year’s London Olympics, where Canada placed ninth overall. He had an even greater year in 1950, when the Montreal YMHA defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons to become the first Canadian national basketball champions from the province of Quebec. That same year, he was also selected to represent Canada at the Maccabiah Games. Now at the peak of his career, he was unfortunate to fracture his shoulder during an exhibition game in Vermont in 1951 and, although he played sporadically thereafter, his career never recovered. He later worked in the needle industry and coached basketball at the YMHA.
