Biography

As a specialist in the 400 metres Jerzy Kowalski was a six-time Polish champion in individual events and relays in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Kowalski won his first national championship in the 400 metres in 1959 and retained his title in 1960 and 1961. He also won two titles in the 4 x 400 metres in 1960 and 1961, along with a title in the 4 x 100 meters in 1962.

Kowalski represented Poland 21 times, including at the 1960 Roma Olympics and at the 1962 European Championships in Beograd. After his athletics career he worked as an activist of OZLA in Bydgoszcz from 1968 to 1990 and was the deputy head at WKS Zawisza for organisational matters from 1977 to 1984. From 1984 Kowalski was an employee and activist of BKS Chemik Bydgoszcz.

Personal Best: 400 – 46.0 (1962).
