Ēriks Vanags competed in the shot put and the discus throw at the 1912 Olympic Games without major success. At Russian championships he achieved better results in jumping events. In 1910, he claimed the Russian title in the high jump and in 1914 in the standing high jump, the latter with a new national record of 1.485 m. At national championships, he added bronze in the pole vault (1910), shot put (1911) and standing long jump (1914).
