Biography

Swedish runner Artur Svensson was a specialist in the 400 and 800 metres and won six medals in the events at the national athletics championships along with silver relay medal at the Olympics. Svensson won his first medal at the national championships with silver in the 400 metres in 1923. The following year he won another 400 metres silver and gold in the 800 metres. His focus then stayed with the 800 metres and went on to win bronze (1925), silver (1926), and another gold (1927), in addition to setting a Swedish record in the distance in 1925.

Svensson, Erik Byléhn, Gustaf Wejnarth, and Nils Engdahl won the silver medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1924 Paris Olympics, finishing just one second behind the team from the United States. Svensson also ran in the 400 metres in Paris, reaching the quarter-finals. Four years later he was named as an alternative for the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but did not run in the heats or final.

Personal Best: 400 – 49.1 (1924).
