Biography

Meredith Rainey was a specialist in the 800 metres who ran for Harvard University. While at Harvard, Rainey won the 1989 NCAA outdoor title, and the 1990 NCAA indoor title. She competed in the event at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, but did not make either final. Rainey ran at four World Championships, with a best finish of fifth in 1993. She won the 800 at the 1995 Pan American Games, and was third in 1999. Rainey married Andrew Valmon, who ran the 4x400 relay for the United States at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, and he later coached her as well. Rainey won the USA National title in 1990 and 1995-96, and was a four-time USA indoor champion. She was ranked in the world top 10 three times, with best rankings of #6 in 1994 and 1998.

Rainey later served as Vice-President of the Chesapeake Region 2012 Coalition, an organization that tried to get the 2012 Olympics for the Washington-Baltimore area. She and her husband also started the Avenue Program, which uses track & field to encourage young people to make good choices in life, set goals, and be disciplined in trying to accomplish those goals. Rainey-Valmon has also worked as a project manager at the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland.
