Biography

Stanislav Stepashkin took up boxing in 1955, and rose to fame in 1960, when he took silver at the Soviet Championships as a featherweight. After taking bronze at the Soviet Championships in 1961, Stepashkin won the Soviet title from 1963-65. Stepashkin also won another bronze in 1966 and a silver in 1968 at the Soviet Championships. Internationally, Stepashkin won gold at the 1964 Olympic Games and was European champion in 1963 and 1965. Stepashkin also competed at the 1967 European Championships, but lost his second round bout to Bulgarian Ivan Mikhaylov. In all, Stepashkin finished his boxing career with a record of 193 wins out of 204 bouts. After retiring from boxing, Stepashkin worked as a boxing coach. From 1968-73 he was head coach of the Moscow region boxing team. From 1974-75, Stepashkin was head coach of the Algerian national boxing team and worked as a coach with the Soviet national boxing team. From 1979-81, Stepashkin was head coach of the Cameroon national boxing team, and also served as head coach of the 1980 Cameroon Olympic boxing team. In the 1980s, Stepashkin worked as head coach of the Seychelles national boxing team.
