Biography

The son of a chauffeur, Aubrey Fielder was commissioned into the Royal Artillery from the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1949. He saw service in Germany, Korea, Egypt (during the Suez crisis), and Kenya. Fielder, who became a brigadier, was later the military assistant to NATO’s deputy supreme commander in Europe. His final military appointment was inspector of Physical and Adventure Training at the Ministry of Defence.

Although competing at the 1956 Cortina Olympics was the highlight of his cross-country skiing career, Fielder would later be involved with the sport in several administrative posts. He was chairman of Army Alpine Skiing 1975-79, and chairman of the Army Ski Association 1979-84. He was also, at the same time, vice-president of the British Ski Federation, and between 1979-87 represented skiing at the British Olympic Association and the Central Council of Physical Recreation.
