Ricardo Carreras first made headlines as a boxer in 1966 when he won the New York Golden Gloves. It was the first of many amateur victories. In 1971 he won a bronze medal in the Pan American Games as well as winning the AAU championship. Three times, in 1969, 1971, and 1972, he was Inter-Service champion while serving in the Air Force. He took an amateur record of 73 and 8 to Munich where he made it to the semi-finals to win a bronze medal.
