Biography

Yago Lamela competed at two Olympics, with his best international finish a silver medal in the long jump at the 1999 World Championships. In that year he set five Spanish indoor long jump records and five records outdoors, with bests of 8.56 both in- and outdoors. He was also World U23 Champion in 1999. In 2003 Lamela added a bronze at the World Championships outdoors, and led the world list that year. He also won silvers at the World Indoor Championships in 1999 and 2003, and was Ibero-American champion in 1998. Lamela was Spanish champion in 1998-2000 and 2003. He sustained injuries to his Achilles tendons and never returned to competition after a 2005 operation. In later years he suffered from depression and anxiety and was found dead at his parents’ home in May 2014.
