Valery Kiriyenko made his international début at the 1991 World Championships, where he was 12th in the 20 km. At the 1992 Winter Olympics, Kiriyenko won a relay silver, was fifth in the 10 km and 11th in the 20 km. At the 1993 World Championships, Kiriyenko won silvers in both the relay and team event and was eighth at 10 km. At the 1994 Winter Olympics, Kiriyenko won his second relay silver, but had less success in individual events. Kiriyenko won his third World Championship silver at the 1994 World Championships in the team event. Domestically Kiriyenko won one Soviet title over 20 km in 1991.
