Active in multiple sports, it was while Jon Beare was at high school that he became passionate about rowing. After his graduation from the University of Western Ontario Beare competed at the World Rowing Championships, winning bronze as part of the eight crew in 1996 and 1997. He rowed in the lightweight coxless fours at three Olympic Games, finishing in seventh place at the 2000 Sydney Games, and in fifth place at the 2004 Athína Games. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics he won bronze along with compatriots Iain Brambell, Mike Lewis, and Liam Parsons. Following his retirement from the sport Beare served as the Athlete Director for the Rowing Canada Board and later became a partner in Hudson Boat Works, which made shells for rowing boats.
