Ukrainian track and field athlete Hennadiy Horbenko had a great start to his career when he won gold in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1994 World Junior Championships in Lisboa. Later that same year Horbenko then became the national champion in the event, before defending his title the following year. He continued to dominate in the event at home, winning seven consecutive national titles from 1999 to 2005.
In addition to the hurdles Horbenko also competed in sprint events, often as part of a relay quartet. In 1999 he won silver at the Military World Games in Zagreb in the 4 x 100 metres relay. One year later he finished eighth in the final of the 400 metres hurdles at the Sydney Olympics, with him also reaching the semi-finals in the 4 × 400 metres relay. In 2003 Horbenko was part of the Ukrainian quartet that won gold in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the Summer Universiade in Daegu. He retired from the sport just three years later at the age of 31.
Personal Bests: 400 – 46.55 (1995); 400H – 48.40 (2000).
