Biography

Kip Janvrin competed in the decathlon at the 2000 Sydney Olympics at age 35, an advanced age for a world-class decathlete. He attended school at D-3 Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and won three D-3 NCAA titles, in the decathlon, pole vault, and 400 metre hurdles.

Janvrin won over 40 decathlons in his career, but his biggest win was a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games. He also won the 1989 US Olympic Festival and took bronze at the 1994 Goodwill Games. Janvrin was best known for his record at the Drake Relays, where he won the decathlon 15 times, leading to his induction into the Drake Relays Hall of Fame. He also has the most 8,000+ point decathlons in US history, with 26.

After the 2000 Olympics he continued competing and won his first national title at the 2001 USA Championships, qualifying him for the 2001 World Championships, where he placed 17th. Janvrin also competed at the 2004 US Olympic Trials but did not make the team. On 8 September 2002 Janvrin set a world record in the icosathlon, a double decathlon, scoring 14,185 points, a mark that lasted a bit over eight years.

During and after his retirement from competition Janvrin became a coach, serving as the head coach or co-head coach at the University of Central Missouri for over 35 years.
