In 1940 Ljungman joined AIK where he remained until 1953, before finishing his domestic career with a brief spell at Huddinge IK. With AIK he won the Swedish championship in 1946 and 1947, earning himself a spot on the national team.
In 1947 he was part of the team that won silver at the World Ice Hockey Championships in Praha. During the tournament Sweden thrashed Belgium 24–1 with Ljungman scoring 12 goals, an individual record for a Swedish player through to 2024. One year later he competed at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics where Sweden finished fourth. The tournament also served as the World and European Championships, with Sweden winning bronze at the latter. Ljungman was only 44-years-old when he died in April 1962.
