Shagdarjav Magvan is, through 2014, the only Mongolian to have been a member of the IOC. He studied at the State University of Mongolia and later became a professor of philology and Mongolian literature through 1958. He then moved into politics and was Secretary of the Party Committee from 1958-60, Vice-Director of the Department of the Party Central Committee from 1960-65, and then Secretary-General of the Central Soviet Trade Unionists of Mongolia from 1965-69. Magvan later entered the business world, becoming director and CEO of a porcelain factory.
In sports admininstration Magvan was President of the Mongolian Olympic Committee from 1972-79, and of the Council of the Mongolian Union for Physical Education and Sports from 1969-78. He was a member of the NOC Executive Board after he stepped down as President, and in 1987 founded the Mongolian Olympic Museum. Co-opted onto the IOC in 1977, Magvan remained on the IOC until 2007 and then became an Honorary Member.
