Biography

A prominent businessman in Austria, Rudolf Nemetschke studied law and political science at the University of Vienna. He later led H Rella & Co, a building company; was President of Austrian Fiat; and was later Honorary President of the Italian Economic Chamber in Austria. In sports, Nemetschke was President of both the Austrian Equestrian and Yachting Federations, and served on the Austrian Olympic Committee. Co-opted onto the IOC in 1969, he was a leading factor in bringing the 1976 Winter Olympics to Innsbruck after the withdrawal of Denver, Colorado as host. Nemetschke was supposed to retire from the IOC in 1974 at the mandatory retirement age of 72, but he was allowed to remain on the IOC through the Innsbruck Olympics, and was awarded with an Olympic Order in 1977.
