Biography

Antonio Rodríguez was an Argentine military officer who competed in fencing, shooting, and modern pentathlon. He was a national champion in team épée in 1952 and 1957 and was South American individual épée champion in 1957. Rodríguez was the 1963 Army pistol champion, and his greatest international triumph came in winning a bronze medal at the 1951 Pan American Games in the team modern pentathlon.

Rodríguez entered sports administration through the Argentinean Fencing Federation and became President in 1970, holding that position through 2005. He served on the Comité Olímpico Argentino (COA) as President from 1977-2005 and founded the Argentine Olympic Academy in 1982. He was also vice-president of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and was President of the Organización Deportiva Suramericana (South American Sports Organization [ODESUR]).

Rodríguez was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1990 and served on the IOC until 2006, at which time he was made an Honorary Member.
