Biography

Ram Ruhee was a teacher in his native Mauritius, and by the early 1960s had moved into an administrative position with the Mauritius Ministry of Education. He was on the Executive Committee of the Mauritius Sports Association from 1955-1963, and then in 1963 he was appointed secretary-general of the Mauritius Sports Association and then the Mauritius Football Association. He later served as Technical Chairman of the African Football Confederation, beginning in 1972. Ruhee was chairman of the African Cup of Nations from 1978-80, and served as a member of the technical committee of FIFA from 1978. In 1972, Ruhee was the founder of the Mauritius Olympic Committee in 1971, and became its secretary-general, and later was secretary-general of the Committee for the Games of the Indian Ocean Islands (1983-88). He was made a member of the IOC in 1988, and served on the Olympic Solidarity Commission.
