Neil “Buster” McGillis came from a big sporting family in Lancaster, Ontario, with his father and an uncle both being good lacrosse players, and another uncle being a distinguished football player. McGillis began to play ice hockey at Williamstown High School before joining the Lake Placid Athletic Club (LPAC). Whilst at the athletics club he managed to become a member of the US Olympic bobsleigh team; however, he was forced to resign due to the small matter of him being a Canadian citizen.
McGillis did manage to compete at the 1932 Lake Placid Games, albeit in several ice hockey exhibition matches that were played in addition to the standard ice hockey tournament. LPAC recorded wins against teams from Germany and Poland, with McGillis scoring in the latter, before losing to a combined Canadian-US team. His sporting career was brief, with him retiring to focus on civic politics at the bequest of his family. McGillis was later inducted into the Glengarry Sports Hall of Fame.
