Puerto Rican tennis player Tico Carrero had success from a young age, winning multiple tournaments as an under-18 player. Carrero won the national singles championship when he was 14 and 16-years-old, and a doubles title with Stanley Pasarell. He represented Puerto Rico at the 1963 Pan American Games and the 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games, winning silver in the doubles at the latter. In 1968 tennis was a demonstration event at the Mexico City Olympics, with Carrero competing in both the singles and doubles. He continued to dominate in the sport back home, becoming the Puerto Rican champion in 1968 and 1974. In the latter half of the 1960s he competed at four editions of the US Open, reaching the third round in 1966. Away from tennis Carrero studied engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
