Biography

John Marzano was a catcher who played for the USA at the 1984 Olympic demonstration baseball tournament. He also played internationally at the 1983 Pan American Games and Intercontinental Cup, winning a Pan Am bronze medal and a silver medal at the Intercontinental Cup. He played in college for Temple University. In 1984 the Boston Red Sox selected him with the 14th overall pick of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Marzano played in the majors from 1987-92 and 1995-98, starting with the Red Sox from 1987-92. He was mostly a reserve catcher. He was with the Texas Rangers in 1995, and finished his career with the Seattle Mariners in 1996-98. During his Major League career Marzano batted .241, with 11 home runs and 72 RBIs.

In 1991 Marzano founded the Marzano Baseball Academy. In later years he often guest hosted on the Phillies Post Game Live show on Comcast SportsNet. He died rather young, at age 45, after a tragic fall at his home in Philadelphia.
