Eight teams competed in 1984, with a round-robin that advanced the top four teams to the semi-finals. Japan and the United States advanced to the final, with Japan winning the final game and the tournament, 6-3. The United States team had several future Major League players, including Mark McGwire, Barry Larkin, Will Clark, Oddibe McDowell, and B. J. Surhoff. The tournament was weakened by the absence of Cuba, which joined the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Olympics, as Cuba was the world’s greatest amateur team in the 1980s.
