Biography

George Bamber was famous for his comic postcards which contained humourous captions. Two of his best known works were “Two Toffs Totally Tipsy” with the caption: “Watching the rain, wished it was whisky”. And another called “Red Pillar Box”, which depicted an old man posting a letter and with the caption: “If you don’t get this please let me know!” He entered the art, literature and music competitions at the 1924 Olympics, and one of his entries in the art competition was “Fide and (et) Fiducia”, which is the motto of the Royal Army Pay Corps. “Finis coronat opus” (The end crowns the work) is a quote from the Roman poet Ovid from his Heroides. Four years after the Olympics, Bamber composed the music and lyrics to O! But it’s Bliss.
