Biography

Steve Mahre is the younger twin brother (by four minutes) of Phil Mahre, but an outstanding skier in his own right. Like Phil, Steve specialized in technical events, mainly the slalom. But at the 1982 World Championships he was the gold medalist in the giant slalom in Schladming, Austria. He was third in the overall World Cup standings in 1982 and fourth in 1981.

After winning the silver medal in the 1984 Winter Olympic slalom, behind his twin brother, Steve Mahre retired at the end of the World Cup circuit that year, ending his career with nine World Cup wins (one giant slalom, one combined, seven slalom) and 21 podium finishes.
