Biography

Constantin Starck was born in Latvia and lived in Berlin, where he was one of the main representatives at the beginning of the modernity movement. He created numerous statues of allegorical figures, grave monuments, fountain figures, bronze busts and war commemoration reliefs, especially in Berlin and Hanover, and later colossal allegorical statues and busts of Hitler and Hindenburg. Starck studied in Stuttgart and subsequently from 1887 at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Starck taught at the educational institute of the arts and crafts museum from 1898-1910. From 1908-39 he was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. A life-size bronze statue from the Municipal Park in Hannover may have been one entry submitted by Starck in 1932. The Kleine Golfspielerin (Little Female Golfer) was created around 1930 and was certainly one of the sculptures shown in Los Angeles. The painter Johannes Starck (born 1862) was his brother, while the painter and textile designer Helene Starck (born 1902) was his daughter.
