Biography

Maria Bujakowa started her artistic education at the Faculty of Artistic Industry of the State Technical School in Lviv, and later studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Vienna. Beginning in 1926 she worked as an art teacher at various schools in Lviv. She taught art from 1945-69, mainly at the Zakopane School of Lace. As the principal of this State Vocational School, later transformed into the Technical College of Weaving, she introduced courses in embroidery on wool, and making colorful linen lace. She specialized in works with fabric materials, such as carpets, tapestries, embroidered clothes, and laces.

Before and after World War II, Bujakowa worked for a number of art cooperatives. She was instrumental in the introduction of weaving the Podhale kilims, carpets for which geometric, vegetable and animal patterns were designed. In addition, she created large individual pieces with figures and landscapes. In 1948, she won the first prize in the national competition to qualify for the Olympic art competitions in the Applied Arts division with her tapestry Procession of Horses, as part of a project by 1932 and 1936 Olympian Michał Bylina. Beginning in 1950, Bujakowa held various positions of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (Związek Polskich Artystów Plastyków). In 1969, she received the distinction of the Polish Olympic Committee in the “Laurel Olympic” competition for sports fabrics.

Bujakowa was married to Jakub Bujak, one of Polands outstanding mountaineers, and a member of the country’s first expedition to the Himalayas, and Maria became an avid climber herself.
