Biography

Slovak Štefan Bednář was an eminent painter, printmaker, illustrator, writer, journalist and politician in Slovakia. In 1924 he entered the School of Applied Arts in Praha and later worked as a draftsman for liberal newspapers. From 1934-36 he lived and worked in Paris. At the beginning of World War II Bednář went to Bratislava. He was imprisoned by the Nazis for his political work in the Slovakian Communist Party and a national uprising in 1944, but managed to survive. He worked up the experiences in his paintings, and after the war received several awards in Czechoslovakia. His son Vladimír “Vlado” (1941-1984) became a well-known author of romance novels.

During his stay in Paris Štefan Bednář started painting and oriented himself to Naive Painting and New Objectivity, amongst others with his sports paintings. Atleti (Athletes) was also painted in Paris, where he was still living during the Berlin Olympics.
