Biography

Aleksandr Zhukov was a Russian economist and politician who was a member of the State Duma from Preobrazhensky from 1994-2004. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1978 with degrees in economics and mathematics and later studied at the Harvard Business School.

Zhukov ascended to a cabinet position in 1995 as chair of the budget committee. In March 2004 he became Deputy Prime Minister of Russia under Mikhail Fradkov. He returned to the State Duma in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016.

In sports, Zhukov was President of the Russian Olympic Committee from 2010-18 and led the organizing committee for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games. He also served as President of the Russian Chess Federation from 2003-09. He was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2013 in his role as an NOC President. However, Zhukov was suspended by the IOC on 5 December 2017 for Russian involvement in the doping system at Sochi 2014.
