Karim Alami

Karim Alami was a Moroccan tennis player. Alami played professionally from 1990 to 2002, achieving a career-best singles ranking of 25 in the world in February 2000.

In 1991 Alami and Greg Rusedski won the boy’s doubles tournament at Wimbledon. The following year, Alami competed in the singles tournament at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, losing his first-round match to Marc Rosset of Switzerland. He was also scheduled to play in the doubles tournament, but did not start the event.

In January 1994 at the Qatar Open, Alami had arguably his biggest win of his career when he defeated the world number one Pete Sampras in the first round of the tournament. At the time Alami was ranked 205 in the world. When he first saw the draw for the tournament, he had already booked a flight for another tournament in Jakarta, believing that he would not make it to the second round.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics Alami competed in the singles tournament. He reached the quarter-finals of the competition where he lost to Roger Federer.

After his retirement as a player Alami moved to Doha and became the director of the Qatar tennis Federation. He has also done commentary work for Al Jazeera.
