From 1916 through 1924, ice hockey defenseman Albert “Bert” McCaffrey played for five different teams in the Ontario Hockey Association Senior League, with the first four coming and going in rapid succession: the Toronto Riversides (1916-1917), the Toronto Crescents (1917-1918), the Toronto Dentals (1918-1919) and the Parkdale Canoe Club (1919-1920). His most famous, however, would be his last, as he joined the Toronto Granites in 1920 and played with them through 1924, capturing two Allan Cups and an Olympic gold medal along the way. After two consecutive Allan Cup victories, awarded to the team as Canadian men’s amateur senior-level hockey champions, the Granites were sent to the 1924 Winter Olympics, where McCaffrey played in five games and scored twenty goals.

McCaffrey’s career had far from peaked, and the following season he joined the Toronto St. Pats of the National Hockey League and stayed with them during their transformation into the Toronto Maple Leafs and early into the 1927-1928 season, when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the 1929-1930 season, he was traded once more, this time to the Montreal Canadiens. It was a beneficial move for McCaffrey, as the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup in 1930. The following season, he played 22 out of 44 games with the Canadiens, but was then sent to the Providence Reds of the Canadian-American hockey league. Although he was technically eligible to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup when the Canadiens won it again in 1931, his name was left off as he did not play in the playoff games. He spent two more seasons in the Canadian-American league, with the Phildelphia Arrows, before retiring from hockey for good in 1933.
