A former South Wales miner, David Rees joined the Royal Artillery as a gunner in 1960. He was a member of the 40th Regiment, the leading skiing regiment in the British Army which won the Army Nordic Championship six years in succession between 1960-65.
Rees took up skiing in 1961 and the following year took part in the Canadian Army Ski Championships when he finished second to John Dent in the biathlon. Rees competed in the 1963 World Biathlon Championships in Austria, and in 1964 was a member of the Great Britain cross country ski team at the Innsbruck Winter Olympics.
