Biography

The son of a doctor, John Rigby was born in Manchester and educated in Switzerland. He started skiing at an early age and in 1956, at the age of 13, won the first of four successive Wengen Junior Championships. He was the British junior champion for the first of three successive years in 1957. Rigby was runner-up to Geoffrey Pitchford in the 1960 British Skiing Championships and was the winner of that year´s Lowlands Skiing Championship.

After a period in the north-east at Sunderland Technical College, Rigby chose to follow his father into medicine and became a medical student at London University´s College Hospital. He represented London University several times at the British Universities Ski Championships and won the slalom and giant slalom titles in 1964, when he also helped London win the team competition. Rigby won the slalom title again in 1966. Rigby was a member of the Great Britain team at the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Olympics and took part in all three disciplines. He was the highest placed member of the team in both the downhill and giant slalom.
