Biography

Börje Salming was a Swedish ice hockey player whose career spanned 23 seasons, including 16 playing for the Maple Leafs in Canada. Salming began his career in Sweden, playing there from 1967 to 1973. In the last three years he played for Brynäs IF, winning the league championship with the team in 1971 and 1972. Following his success in Sweden Salming was signed by the Maple Leafs as a free agent ahead of the 1973–74 NHL season. In January 1988 Salming became the first European player to appear in 1,000 NHL matches. In total Salming played 1,099 matches for the Maple Leafs, where he was nicknamed “The King”.

At an international level Salming played for the Swedish national team. For Sweden he played in the 1972 and 1973 World Championships where the team won silver and bronze respectively. Salming also played in three Canada Cups and represented Sweden at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. In 1996 Salming became the first European player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 2017 he was included in the NHL’s list of 100 Greatest Players. In July 2022 Salming was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He died from the disease just four months later.
