Biography

A carpenter by profession, Mick Mean took up competitive canoeing in 1962. He went on to become a member of the Great Britain K-4 quartet at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. They qualified for the semi-finals via the repêchage but were then eliminated after finishing fifth in their heat. Also attending those Mexico Games was Mean’s younger sister Barbara. The siblings had also gained selection for the 1966 World Championships in East Berlin. Mick and Barbara were coached by their father Don, who was also a coach to the British Olympic team. Don sadly died at the age of 55 in 1981.
