Biography

East German Martina Fischer, later wife of her teammate Frank-Peter Bischof, won four gold and two silver medals at the Flatwater Canoe World Championships in 1977 and 1978 as Martina Fischer and in 1979 under her married name of Martina Bischof. At the 1980 Moskva Olympics, which were boycotted by many Western countries, she won gold in the K2-500 alongside Carsta Genäuß.

Together with non-Olympian Marion Rösiger, Fischer-Bischof won the East German nationals in the K2-500 from 1976-79, but Rösiger was then eliminated from the national squad due to “Western contacts”. Rösiger and Fischer-Bischof also won the 1979 East German K4-500 title. Bischof later worked as a traffic businesswoman.
