Biography

After achieving only modest success at the 1988 Winter Games, Vegard Ulvang dominated cross-country skiing at the 1992 Games. At Calgary in 1988, he won a bronze medal in the 30 km. but four years later at Albertville he won three golds (10 km., 30 km., and relay) and a silver (combined pursuit). In 1994, he was no longer a major contender for individual honors but won his sixth Olympic medal with a silver in the relay. He competed injured in 1994, and also shortly after the trauma of his younger brother’s being lost and dying while running in the woods in the autumn of 1993. Ulvang spent the summer of 1991 training by skiing across Greenland, and climbing Denali (Mt. McKinley) in Alaska.
