East German biathlete Jürgen Wirth participated at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, finishing fifth with the East German relay team and 16th in the 20 km event. At the World Biathlon Championships, he won a gold and silver medal with the relay squads in 1986 and 1987. Domestically, he won two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. According to a statement he made, Wirth was instructed by his trainer Frank Ullrich to take doping substances as part of the state-decreed doping in East German competitive sports. Nevertheless, there were no investigations in this matter.
