The 1960 weightlifting events were held at the Palazzetto dello Sport, an arena specially constructed for the Roma Olympics, which was finished in 1957. The 1960 weightlifting programme was precisely the same as in 1956, with seven weight classes for men, all at the same weight levels.
The competitions were dominated by the Soviet Union, which won six medals and five gold medals. The United States also won six medals, but only one gold medal, and this was the end of the line for the United States in Olympic weightlifting. While USA lifters won 27 medals between 1948-60, the United States’ men would win only six more Olympic weightlifting medals from 1964-2020, the last two of these coming at Los Angeles 1984, as host nation. This podium-less American men streak would end at Paris 2024, with a lone bronze medal by weightlifter Hampton Morris in the featherweight class.
