Tennis at the 1920 Summer Olympics

Dates 16 – 24 August 1920
Medal Events 5

The lawn tennis events of the 1920 Olympics were contested on newly laid courts just outside the Beerschot Stadium, which housed the track & field events. The courts, made of crushed brick that resembled the modern day terre battue, or red clay, were said to be in poor condition and the proximity of the track & field spectators caused many matches to be interrupted by cheering from the adjacent stadium. The 1920 Olympic tennis events were weakened by the absence of the Americans – no U.S. player competed. The U.S. Championships at Forest Hills were held at the same time as the Olympic event, and the American players elected to compete in their national championships.
